I think it’s important to dispel some of the myths involved in “getting ripped” abdominals. Forget what you see on TV, and learn the truth about how to get in shape.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 1: Get rid of the flab first! You may strengthen and tone your abdominal muscles with exercises but the results won’t show unless you lose the fat on top. Gotta work on that diet!&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 2: Crunches are as good or better than sit-ups. Your abdominals are only involved in the first part of a sit-up. Once your shoulders lift off the floor, lower back and hip muscles take over and it’s no longer important to your abs to continue to your knees.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 3: Take a day or two break on working your abdominal muscles. You don’t want to overwork your neck and lower back, so take a break.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 4: Do only 10 – 15 reps a set. Treat ab muscles like other muscle groups. If you can do more reps it’s probably too easy and exercise or you’re not doing it right. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 5: The floor works as well as a machine or gizmo. Machines work your back and hips possible more than your abdominals. Floor exercises can be more varied and challenging.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 6: Lift from your abs, don’t use your head and neck. You’ll avoid neck pain if you learn this technique.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 7: Don’t move your elbows during ab exercises. Leave them out and rounded inward slightly to avoid pulling on your neck.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Step 8: Along with keeping your abs pulled in, do not flatten or arch your back. We went last May to Kauai and it was so gorgeous, wonderful, relaxing- not to mention that I didn't have to feel like hiding when I put on my swimsuit. I might never have made it to Playboy, but I was looking pretty good.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had been going to a water aerobics 2-3 times a week which helped me tone, and gave me more energy and motivation. I really wasn't on a diet, per se. I was using the &lt;a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2671128-10411692"&gt;e-diet program&lt;/a&gt; which got me started and gave me a direction to go, plus plenty of choices. I was even using the forums which helped encourage me when I didn't have enough encouragement on my own. Anyway, I managed to drop those 20 lbs and was feeling a lot better physically (and mentally too!)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I did okay for a few weeks after we got back from out trip, then I got sick. After a few weeks of taking care of myself (and sick kids), I was out of the habit of going to class. I got back into my "mocha a day" habit rather quickly. To make a long story short, I've gained most of that 2o lbs back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I've decided that I'm sick and tired of looking this way and not having the energy that I did have, and have recommitted myself to getting my nice body back! I'm just a little behind the bandwagon of New YEar's resolutions! I started water aerobics again this week and go set up on a good program with &lt;a href="http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2671128-10411692"&gt;ediets &lt;/a&gt;and I'm on my way. I have scaled back on my mocha habit - I've never been one to quit "cold turkey"!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You might ask, why are you writing about this? I am attempting to hold myself accountable to stick to my plan. I thought maybe my story might possibly be an encouragement to to others wanting to get trim and healthy again. Think about it like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;It takes 20 steps to burn 1 calorie.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;There are approximately 2,000 steps in 1 mile.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Calories of an average burger and fries is 1,160.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;To walk off 1,160 calories is 23,200 steps&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;23,200 steps is a bit over 11 miles.          &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Does that Big Mac and fries sound like such a good idea now? Let's take at look at calories that are in some of the popular fast food choices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;Burger King - whopper with cheese - 850 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Mc Donald's - cheeseburger (small) - 330 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Mc Donald's - grilled chicken sandwich deluxe - 440 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Arby's - beef and cheddar - 510 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Arby's - chicken, bacon and swiss sandwich - 610 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Dairy Queen - double cheeseburger - 540 calories&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Arby's curly fries (large) - 600 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Pizza - 12" slice of cheese pizza - 875 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Pizza - 12" slice of pepperoni pizza - 1,080 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Hot dog - regular size - 240 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Mc Donald's -  french fries (large) - 540 calories&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Arby's - curly fries (large) - 600 calories&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Dairy Queen - chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard - 950 calories&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;Do the math, folks! You can eat a quarter pounder with cheese, large fries and a large shake if you don't mind taking a brisk 5 hour walk to burn it off! Cut it back a bit and have a regular size hamburger and regular fries (nix the shake) and you can cut that walk back to two hours!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maybe some Chinese food instead of Mc Donald's or Burger King? Sorry, but Chinese food is high in calories and fat. About 70-80% of those calories come from fat! If you really don't want to forgo your favorite Chinese restaurant then try and go for a vegetable main dish. You can also cut calories by up to 50% by choosing steamed or boiled rice over fried rice. Try to say no to fried noodles and spring rolls which are high calorie add-ons. Of course, there's always portion control. Stop before you feel full, and busy yourself with something else. Before long you may find that you do feel satisfied and be glad you didn't polish off every last bite.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hopefully, we can all take a wake-up call and take a closer look at what we're eating. The old standbys of good nutrition; fruits, vegetables, lean meats, etc shouldn't be replaced with the high calorie foods with lots of saturated fats. Did you know that Americans consume an average of 115 lbs of sugar in a year. Most of us are addicted to sugar to some degree. And, think about it, children with their love of sugar normally consume more than adults. So the damages of sugar is magnified in their bodies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sugar is made by refining sugar cane or beets and what is left is an unnatural product stripped of all enzymes,vitamins and minerals. It can be more damaging that chemicals and poison!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some of the damage sugar causes is:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;dental decay&lt;br /&gt;fatigue and listlessness&lt;br /&gt;Linked to diabetes&lt;br /&gt;Linked to hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia&lt;br /&gt;weight gain&lt;br /&gt;cancer feeds on sugar&lt;br /&gt;long term use damages pancreas and adrenal glands&lt;br /&gt;throws immune system out of whack&lt;br /&gt;contributes to ADD in children&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Beware of sugar substitutes. Aspartame, used in Equal, Nutra Sweet, Spoonful and Equal Measure. They contain powerful compounds that can cause severe biological effects. In processing, it converts to methanol and then to formaldehyde! This causes damage to cells and genetics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reactions to aspartame include headache, depression, fatigue, nausea, breahing problems, seizures and memory loss. It can also cause developmental problems during pregnancy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A good alternative to sugar is stevia, which is an herb. It is natural and does not give false energy like sugar does. Other more acceptable sweeteners are agave syrup,rice syrup, date paste, fruit juice concentrate and honey. The 3 parts are the bran (the outer shell), the endosperm (the starchy inner portion) and the germ (the nutrient rich portion). Refined grains, such as white bread, do not have bran or germ so they have less nutrients. Most U.S. grain products fall into this category.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;"&gt;What are their potential health benefits?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 130%;"&gt;Only recently has whole wheat grain been found to be a factor in reducing the risk of chronic disease, including the risk of heart disease, some cancers, and diabetes. It may even play a role in obesity prevention. Whole grains are high-fiber foods packed with vitamins and minerals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 130%;"&gt;How do we find them in the supermarket?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 130%;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Look for grain as the first ingredient: the word "whole" before the grain is imperative. Color is NOT a sign of whole grain. Brown may come from caramel coloring, molasses, or other ingredients. Increasing selenium is also thought to cut the risk of colon cancer(or rectal) as well as lung cancer! So where do you get your selenium from? Try whole grain foods.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Men are also usually lacking in their intake of vitamin E and B6, folic acid, magnesium and zinc. Focus on snacks that will help them boost their intake of these vitamins and minerals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Healthy snacks for men:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;A handful of nuts 5 times a week.
